5. Background

Annual national accounts are compiled in accordance with the European System of Accounts. The ESA 1995 is broadly consistent with the System of National Accounts of the United Nations (1993 SNA) and the same stands for the ESA 2010 ESA and SNA 2008 as regards the definitions, accounting rules and classifications. ESA nevertheless incorporates certain differences, particularly in its presentation which is more in line with its use within the European Union. To ensure that the methodological provisions are strictly applied, ESA 95 was adopted in the form of a Council Regulation dated 25 June 1996 and similarly ESA 2010 with a Council Regulation dated 21 May 2013.
